I absolutely loved this book; the language admittedly a translation, but I shall be tracking down the original German A.
Wow, who would’ve thought that this book would be kinda depressing? The first depicts a day in the life of two hardworking farmers and the carefree play of their children. It left a strong impression at the time and I would like to read it again in English to find out if my memory of the story is accurate and if it makes a similar impression 60 years on.

Literally anybody who read the title. This is clearest in the final sentences of the story, which contain the severely moralizing—and totally inappropriate—response of the local press to the tragedy.
It is based on an actual event the author read about in in a short newspaper notice: Share your thoughts with other customers. I’ve probably said too much about the plot already, given the inexplicable goodreads proscription against “spoilers,” but I will add that fairly little happens, outside of the heads and hearts of the main characters, except for the last few pages which finally move things to their inevitable climax.

During the physical fight they finally succumb to, their children discover their love for each other.

Dec 06, Eba rated it liked it. Their descent into poverty is demoralizing and is experienced keenly by the two children, who are very much a product of their environment, highly sensitive to changes in social standing and to moral codes, and ashamed of the behavior of their fathers.
The two young lovers are charming individuals and the story is a romantic tragedy. Can’t say anything more than that I disliked it.
The two farmers not only become enemies over a piece of land, they ruin themselves over the rivalry so much that, at the time the children discover their love for each other, there is no family left to stop the two young people from getting married!
